Alla was the daughter of pioneering Quaker Abolitionist & Feminist Abigail Kelley Foster, who spoke at the 1838 Anti-Slavery Convention in Philadelphia. Daughter Alla carried these ideals to Sandwich, and was a leader in forming the first socially conscious women's organization there. In Sandwich, women received the vote 17 years before the nation. The present building was erected on Alla's site, also known as Gold Mine Pasture, in 1969 or the early 70's. A generous 1,920 sq ft shingle styled lodge, it is simple, functional, and sited for views. Year round and well maintained, this comfortable retreat on 14.7 acres has spectacular 180' views of Squam Lake and the surrounding mountains up to Sandwich Notch. It is truly an eyrie, an eagle's perch for a free mind to soar. Redolent of the history of American freedoms, and utterly rich in natural splendor, such a place is rare beyond measure.
